digiKam is available for Windows, Mac OS X, FreeBSD, and multiple Linux distributions. Focusing on Windows alone, it must be said that a wizard will help you install and configure the digital photo management application. You will get to choose where to keep your images, choose where to store information and metadata about your images, choose how to open RAW images in the editor, choose how images are displayed in preview mode and on the Light Table, choose how images are opened, and choose if you want contextual tooltips to be displayed.

As mentioned above, digiKam has a user friendly interface that can be customized. From the View Menu you can pick one of several view modes, you can choose how albums and images are sorted, you can choose how images are grouped, and more.
